b'CARES 2023 Annual ReportIncidence &DemographicsA San Antonio Fire Department (TX) paramedic swiftly transports a patient to an ambulance.2023 Dataset and Incidence of OHCA EventsThis report presents CARES data from the most recent calendar year, January 1 to December 31, 2023. To be included in the annual National Report, EMS agencies must enter at least one complete calendar year of data and meet a patient lost-to-follow-up threshold of less than 1%. The CARES 2023 National Reports are available for viewing at: https://mycares.net/sitepages/reports2023.jsp.The 2023 dataset includes 2,343 EMS agencies and 2,245 hospitals, representing a population of 167.6 million, approximately 50.3% of the U.S. population. In 2023, 139,822 OHCA events were reported to CARES. The crude incidence of non-traumatic, worked arrests was 83.4 per 100,000, slightly lower than the incidence rate of 88.8 per 100,000 observed in 2022. Using census data to extrapolate to the U.S. population 1 , CARES estimates that there were approximately 278,075 EMS-treated, non-traumatic OHCA cases in the United States last year. DemographicsIn 2023, the majority of CARES patients were male (63.0%). Of the reported OHCA events, 97.3% (n=136,011) were adults and 2.7% (n=3,791) were children, aged 18 years and younger. The median age of OHCA patients was 65.0 years (mean: 62.1; standard deviation: 19.3). The age distribution varied significantly between males and females (Figure 2), with females having a higher median age of arrest (67.0 vs 64.0 years, p.0001) 80 15% 22%65-79 34% 33%50-64 28% 24%Age Group (years)35-49 14% 12%19-34 7% 6%1-18 1% 2% 1 1% 1%40% 30% 20% 10% 0% 10% 20% 30% 40%Male FemaleFigure 2.
