2.5 YEARS INTO THE CDC CARES EXPANSION
AND MODERNIZATION GRANT
2023
2028
In 2023, CARES was awarded the CDC CARES Expansion and Modernization Grant, made possible through the
Cardiovascular Advances in Research and Opportunities Legacy (CAROL) Act. Now halfway through this five-
year initiative, CARES has made significant progress across its four strategic focus areas:
CARES continues to grow its national footprint, now supporting
36 statewide registries, with a presence in 10 additional states.
This expansion has been paired with strengthened regional
coordination, including quarterly meetings across CARES’ six
regions to enhance collaboration, share best practices, and
support data-driven improvement.
Nationwide Expansion
Addressing Outcome Variability
The NextGen platform will equip users with more
advanced tools to identify gaps, target interventions,
and drive improvements in OHCA outcomes. In parallel,
CARES is integrating external data sources to build a more
comprehensive view of the cardiac arrest system, helping
pinpoint where targeted resources and interventions can have
the greatest impact.
CARES is preparing to pilot its NextGen platform in the
coming months—a major step forward in usability,
performance, and insight generation. The redesigned
platform will feature:
• Simplified, user-friendly workflows
• Enhanced validation, system reliability, and security
• Expanded data visualization and reporting capabilities
Modernized Software Platform
Through ongoing collaboration with the Resuscitation
Academy and CPR LifeLinks, CARES is advancing quality
improvement by pairing robust data with proven training
programs and implementation support. This integrated
approach helps strengthen every link in the Chain of Survival
and empowers communities to improve outcomes.
